Today Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix for a record 9th time in his illustrious career. He is the first driver ever to win at a track 9 times.

It was actually Hamilton’s teammate, George Russel, that won pole on Saturday and started the race in first. Unfortunately, he had a water system issue on his car which forced him to retire from the race.

This left Hamilton on his own to fight the two McLarens and championship leading Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.

The race was exciting from the beginning, many variables caused by the inclement weather throughout.

Rain popped up throughout the race, which forced drivers to switch from slick tires and intermediates and back again.

Some drivers, such as Ferrari’s Charles LeClerc, went on to the intermediates too early and were severely punished.

LeClerc went on intermediate tires just as the rain began, but the track was not wet enough to give the tires the desired pace.

Instead of admitting the mistake, LeClerc and Ferrari stayed on the tires which cost them at least 20 seconds of time.

LeClerc finished the race in 14th after starting the race in 11th due to a poor qualifying session.

This is the second out of the last four weekends that Ferrari has made absolutely terrible choices in wet weather conditions.

Today’s result further highlights Ferrari’s worrying downturn of performance since winning the Monaco Grand Prix just six weeks ago.

At the beginning of the season, Ferrari was the clear second best team behind Red Bull. Now it looks like they’ve been surpassed by McLaren and Mercedes.

Hamilton will be leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari next year. He leaves Mercedes as a seven time world drivers champion and one of the greatest drivers of all time.

To see Hamilton win a race for the first time in over two years has to make Ferrari feel as if they made the right choice in signing him.

As he stood on the top step of the podium today, the same thought must have also entered Hamilton’s mind: “Did I make the right choice?”

We’ll know in a couple of years’ time.
