After six seasons with Newcastle United in the English Premier League, Miguel Almirón is returning to where it all started.
The winger was a key piece in Atlanta United’s inaugural season in 2017 and helped the team win a championship in 2018.
After the two separated for the 2019 season, both have endured their struggles on either side of the pond.
In the last six seasons, Atlanta United has had a losing record three times and missed the playoffs twice.
Almirón had his struggles adjusting to the top flight competition that Europe provides. He finished his time in Europe with 23 goals and 6 assists.
His best season was in 2023 when he contributed 11 goals in the campaign, even scoring a Champions League goal against PSG.
It certainly feels like the perfect time for Almirón to be coming back to Atlanta with the Paraguayan turning just 31 years old next month.
Atlanta United is coming off the back of having had a Cinderella playoff run which included beating a Lionel Messi led Inter Miami side.
Adding Almirón to the team will not only bring added firepower to the wing, but also a respected veteran to the team’s younger players.
Could this move attract other former Atlanta United players such as Josef Martinez to rejoin the squad?
Could Almirón be a catalyst that makes the club like a true championship caliber team once again?
Even if that’s not the case, this move has Atlanta United fans feeling it’s 2018 again - and I don’t think any of them would tell you they’re complaining.
